I had never made granny squares. So I googled and found this great tutorial on Craftpassion. I followed this tutorial and made some granny squares. Then I joined them together and added border to make this table runner.
Abbreviations/ stitches used (US terms)
Ch- chain
Tr- treble crochet
Dc- double crochet
Sl st- slip stitch
Things you will need:
- Worsted weight yarn in 5 colours (4 colours for granny squares and 1 colour for joining and border)
- I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Pair of scissors
Make total 12 granny squares. I used 4 colours and I made 3 granny squares of each colour. I have worked the 1st round in a ch instead of 4 ch circle or magic ring method. Click here for the details.
Pattern:
Granny square:
Round 1: ch 3, 12 dc in 3rd ch from the hook. Sl st in 1st dc. Pull the yarn tail tightly to close the centre of the circle. (12 dc)
Round 2: ch 5 (tr + ch2), tr in same st (corner made), dc in each of next 2 sts, *tr-ch2-tr in next st ( 2nd corner made), dc in each of next 2 sts,* repeat from * to * 2 more times, sl st to ch space.
Round 3: ch 5, tr in same ch space, 2dc in next st, dc in each of next 4 sts, 2dc in next st, *tr-ch2-tr in next ch space, 2dc in next st, dc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from * to * 2 more times, sl st to ch space.
Round 4: ch 5, tr in same ch space, 2dc in next st, dc in each of next 8 sts, 2dc in next st, *tr-ch2-tr in next ch space, 2dc in next st, dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from * to * 2 more times, sl st to ch space.
Fasten off.
Joining the granny squares together:
Now arrange the granny squares as per the picture or you choice. Join the squares together with flat slip stitch. You can also use your favourite method for joining the squares.

Adding border:
Join yarn in any corner. Ch 3, add 1 dc in each st, 1 dc in each joint and dc-tr-dc in each corner. Join with sl st to ch 3. Fasten off. Weave in the ends.
