Unforgettable shells beanie ADULT sizes

My cousin had brought me a skein of this beautiful yarn (Red heart boutique unforgettable shade 3945 parrot) from the US. I have been saving this for a perfect pattern. And I really think that this pattern is perfect for this perfect yarn. I am in love (even though it's little difficult to work with and much more difficult to frog 😂). Check out the pictures sent by the testers. Also, I would like to thank all my testers for helping me out and improving the pattern. 😊 They all were very helpful.

Click here for baby sizes and child sizes.

Materials

  • Red heart boutique unforgettable yarn 1 skein (or any DK/sport weight yarn with 11-12 WPI)
  • 4.5 mm and 4 mm crochet hook (or hook to obtain the gauge and 1 size smaller hook). (Except for size small, use same hook throughout)
  • Pair of scissors
  • Yarn needle

Sizing

Small, medium and large (to fit head circumference 21", 22" and 23")

Gauge

After completion of round 3, the diameter of the flat circle should be 7.5 cm.
Make sure you measure the diameter from front loop to front loop (not from back loop to back loop). Please check the picture provided. Also make sure that you measure exactly at the centre.

Abbreviations

US terms
Ch: chain
Dc: double crochet
Sl st: slip stitch
Sc: single crochet
Hdc: half double crochet

Notes:

  1. Ch3 and ch2 for dc rounds do NOT count as a dc.
  2. Ch1 does NOT count as a sc.
  3. Ch3 for shells round counts as a dc.
  4. Join with sl st at the end of each round.
  5. For dc rounds, instead of adding last 2 dc in one st, add 1 dc in last st and 1 dc in sl st of previous round.
  6. Shell stitch = 5 dc in same st
  7. After the leveling round is done, measure the beanie circumference. If it's perfect for you then use the same hook for the brim. If you want snug fit, then only swith to the smaller hook).

[For shells round, sc is worked in the middle st of the shell from previous round and shell is worked into sc from previous round]

Repeat last 2 rounds till the hat measures 6.5" (7", 7.5") from the top. For slouchy beanie, continue to repeat shell rounds till hat measures 8" (9", 9.5"), ending on round 2.

Leveling round:

Ch 1, sc in same st, *hdc in each of next 2 sts, dc in next st, hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next st*, repeat from * to *, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, join to sc with sl st. Do NOT fasten off. Continue to ribbing.
[For leveling, add sc in the centre st of the shell, hdc in other 4 sts of the shell and dc in sc.]

Ribbing:
1 ribbing row is worked across each beanie stitch. Work total 78 (84, 90) rows.

Switch to the smaller hook (except for size small)

Row 1: ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch, slip stitch to 1st stitch on beanie, sl st to next st on beanie. (12 sts)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc-blo in next 11 sts, sc in last st. (12 sts)

Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, sc-blo in next 11 sts, sl st into next 2 sts on beanie.

Continue rows 2 and 3 all around. Join with 1st ribbing row with sl sts. Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

If you are unfamiliar with this technique of adding ribbing, do watch this great video tutorial by TL yarn crafts. Crocheters who have never used this technique tend to place 2 rows of the ribbing for each st on the beanie. Carefully watch where you should put the sts.

Here is a picture tutorial for the ribbing.

Add a pom pom if you want.

Wanderlust ribbed beanie

It's a beginner friendly pattern that involves no increases or decreases. Beanie is worked flat in a rectangle, the the sides are sewn together and the top is closed. I have used Nako sports wool bulky yarn which is perfect for winter. It is 25% wool and 75% acrylic yarn, which provides sufficient warmth. In addition to that, wool provides strech and elasticity to the beanie. I would totally recommend wool-acrylic blend or 100% wool yarn for this project, but you can also use acrylic yarn. (Only adult sizes are available for free here on my blog. Paid pdf is available on Ravelry which includes all the sizes from preemie to adult large.) Check out the beanies made by my amazing testers.
