Suzette Baby Bonnet

Directions are given for newborn size. Changes for other sizes are in parentheses. Stitch counts are given in the parentheses at the end of the rows.

Materials:

·       Sport weight yarn (9-10 WPI): 78 (95, 113, 124, 137) yards

·       4.5 mm crochet hooks (or size needed to obtain the gauge)

·       Yarn needle

·       Pair of scissors

Abbreviations (US terminology):                                            

  • Ch = chain
  • St/s = stitch/es
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Dc = double crochet
  • RS= right side

Gauge:

After 3rd round, diameter of the flat circle should be 7 cm.

Make sure you measure the diameter from front loop to front loop (not from back loop to back loop). Please check the picture provided. Also make sure that you measure exactly at the centre.


Notes:

  1. Ch 1 does not count as stitches.
  2. Where increase is mentioned, make 2 dc in same st.
  3. Join with sl st at the end of each round. Do NOT turn after each round.
  4. For dc rounds, instead of adding last inc in one st, add 1 dc in last st and 1 dc in sl st of previous round.

Pattern:

For all sizes

Round 1: In magic circle, ch2, 10 dc. (10 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, inc in each st. (20 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, dc in same st as ch 1, *inc in next st 1 dc in next st**, repeat from * to ** for 9 times, inc in last st (30 sts).

Measure the gauge.

Round 4: ch 1, dc in each of next 2 sts *inc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts**, repeat from * to ** for 9 times, inc in last st (40 sts)

Only for size newborn

Round 5: ch 1, *dc in each of next 5 sts, 2dc in next st**, repeat from * to ** for 6 times, dc in last 4 sts (46 sts)

Only for size 0-3m

Round 5: ch 1, dc in each of next 3 sts *inc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts*, repeat from * to ** for 9 times, inc in last st (50 sts)

Only for size 3-6m

Round 5: ch 1, dc in each of next 3 sts *inc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts**, repeat from * to ** for 9 times, inc in last st (50 sts)

Round 6: ch 1, dc in each of next 24 sts, inc in next st, dc in each of next 24 sts, inc in last st (52 sts)

Only for size 6-12 m

Round 5: ch 1, dc in each of next 3 sts *inc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts*, repeat from * to ** for 9 times, inc in last st (50 sts)

Round 6: ch 1, *dc in each of next 4 sts, inc in next st * dc in each of next 6 sts, inc in next st**, repeat from * to ** for 5 times, dc in last 5 sts (56 sts)

Only for size 1-3 year:

Round 5: ch 1, dc in each of next 3 sts *inc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts**, repeat from * to ** for 9 times, inc in last st (50 sts)

 

Round 6: ch 1, dc in each of next 4 sts *inc in next st, dc in each of next 4 sts**, repeat from * to ** for 9 times, inc in last st (60 sts)

 

For all sizes

Now the bonnet will be worked in rows, turning after each row.

 Row 1 (RS): ch 1, (sc, dc) in same st as ch 1, *skip next st, (sc, dc) in next st**, repeat from * to ** till 7 (7, 7, 7, 9) sts remaining. skip next st, sc in next st. Leave remaining 5 (5, 5, 5, 7) sts unworked.

(41, 45, 47, 51, 53 sts)

 Row 2:  ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in same st as ch 1, *skip next st, (sc, dc) in next st**, repeat from * to ** till 2 sts remaining, skip next st, sc in last st.

 

Repeat row 2 till the bonnet depth measures 5.25” (5.5”, 5.75”, 6.5”, 7”) ending on wrong size (odd number) row. Do NOT fasten off. Proceed to edging.

Adding front edging and ties:

Ch 1, turn. Add sc in each stitch, ch 55 (55, 60, 65, 65), sl st in the back bumps of the ch, sc evenly all the way around the bottom of the bonnet, ch 55 (55, 60, 65, 65), sl st in the back bumps of the ch, sl st with the sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
