Ice cream Tote Bag (Beginner friendly pattern)
In 2017, I participated in MICQ's Guinness World Record Event, for the longest crochet scarf. That time I received sponsored yarn. I had some yarn left after completing the scarves.
I was not very experienced in crochet at that time. I was actually making a table runner for my mother, but the yarn was insufficient. So I folded the rectangle in half, sewed the sides together, added the straps... And this is how this bag was born 😂
Things you will need:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in 3 colours; A, B and C
- I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook
- Lining fabric (optional)
Gauge:
- Needle and thread
Not crucial for this project
Finished bag measurements:
Stitches used/ Abbreviations:
Ch- chain
Dc- double crochet
Lcdc- long chain dc
Sc- single crochet
Special stitches:
Star stitch
Lcdc: draw up a loop to the height of dc, 1 dc in same st. ( No need to ch 3 at the beginning of dc row)
Pattern
With colour A,
Row 1 (RS): ch 75, dc in 3rd ch from the hook (ch 2 does NOT count as a stitch), dc in each ch. (73 sts)
Row 2-4: turn, lcdc in 1st st, dc in each st. (73 sts)
Row 5-6: star stitch
Row 7-10: turn, lcdc in 1st st, dc in each st. (73 sts)
With colour B,
Row 11-12: star stitch
With colour C,
Row 13-16: turn, lcdc in 1st st, dc in each st. (73 sts)
Row 17-18: star stitch
Row 19-22: turn, lcdc in 1st st, dc in each st. (73 sts)
If you want to add lining to the bag, do it now. And then proceed. You can also skip this step.
Fold the rectangle width wise and join the sides with sc and colour B yarn. (36 sc on each side)
Adding straps
Now we will work in rounds without turning.
Join colour B in top corner of the bag with sl st.
Round 1: ch 1, add 78 sc evenly across the edge. Do not join with sl st.
Round 2: sc in next 13 sts, ch 60, skip next 13 st, sc in next 26 sts, ch 60, sc in next 13 sts. (If you want to adjust the straps length, adjust the no of ch. Make sure you have equal chains on both sides.)
Round 3: sc in each of next sts and chs. Sl st in 1st sc. (172 sts)
Roun 4: Lcdc in 1st st, dc in each st. Join with sl st to 1st st. Fasten of (172 sts)
Weave in the ends.
