Aesira newborn mittens and booties

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn (10-11 WPI) in 2 colours
  • 5 mm crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Pair of scissors
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

13 hdc by 11 rows = 4” by 4”

Abbreviations

US terminology
MC = main colour
CC = contrasting colour
ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 together
sc = single crochet
WS = wrong side
RS = right side

Special Stitches:


Picot: ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from the hook

Modified hdc2tog: yarn over, insert hook in the next st, pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), insert hook in the next st and pull up a loop (4 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through all the 4 loops on the hook.

Notes:

  1. Ch 1 does not count as a stitch
  2. DK yarn also works for this pattern. Just make sure you match the gauge.
  3. This set/mittens/botties can also be made for a baby boy. Choose yarn colour accordingly and skip the picots, instead do sc border.

Mittens
Make 2.

Mittens are worked in rounds. Join with sl st to the 1st st at the end of each round. TURN after each round.

Round 1 (WS): With MC, ch 2, 8 hdc in 2nd ch from the hook, join in 1st st with sl st, pull the yarn tail to close. Alternatively, you can use magic ring. (8 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, turn, 2 hdc in each st (16 sts). Weave the yarn tail on WS.

Round 3-7: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st (16 sts)

Fasten of MC, change to CC.

Round 8: ch 1, turn, *sc in next 3 sts, picot**, repeat from * to ** all around, sc in last st.

Ties:

Make 2. With CC, ch 55. Fasten off. Pull the yarn ends tightly and cut the extra tails on both the side. Using yarn needle, weave the chain through the sts of round 7.


Booties:

Make 2.

Booties are worked in rounds. Join with sl st to the 1st st at the end of each round. TURN after each round.

Round 1 (RS): ch 11, 2 hdc in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in next 8 ch, 4 hdc in last ch. Now work on the opposite side of chs, (at the same time, hide the yarn tail), 8 hdc in each of next ch, 2 hdc in last ch. (24 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st. (24 sts)

Round 3: ch1, turn, hdc in each of next 8 sts, hdc2tog 4 times, hdc in last 8 sts. (20 sts)

Round 4: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st. (20 sts)

Round 5: ch1, turn, hdc in each of next 6 sts, hdc2tog 4 times, hdc in last 6 sts. (16 sts)

Round 6: ch 1, turn, hdc in each st. (16 sts)

Fasten off MC, change to CC.

Round 7: ch 1, turn, *sc in next 3 sts, picot**, repeat from * to ** all around, sc in last st. 

Ties:

Make 2. With CC, ch 55. Fasten off. Pull the yarn ends tightly and cut the extra tails on both the side. Using yarn needle, weave the chain through the sts of round 6.
